Pregnancy is quite a miracle. Growing my little men have been the biggest privilege despite the morning sickness, weight gain, aches, and pains.

Our bodies go through so many changes and with all the things a new baby needs the budget doesn’t always allow for an extensive maternity wardrobe and the reality is you also don’t want to invest too much money on maternity clothing.

My pregnancies were completely different. With my firstborn, I only bought a few maternity pieces during my last trimester. I could still fit into my jeans the last trimester and during the last month, I just had to wear waist extenders. With my last pregnancy, I had to purchase jeans and pants by the end of the first trimester.

H&M was one of my favorite places to buy maternity pieces. I especially loved their denim range, different cuts, styles and they look like regular jeans and oh so comfortable! This is so refreshing for maternity wear!

Look for non-maternity items that are bump friendly pieces.
During both my pregnancies, I would try and invest in pieces that could be worn during and after pregnancy. I purchased beautiful designs from local designer Anneen Henze which are maternity and breastfeeding friendly. You can shop the collection online at anneenhenze.co.za

Kimonos
This was my go-to item during my recent pregnancy. They are so chic, stylish and so flattering. Perfect for day and dressing it up for a night out.

Oversized shirts and jackets
Just keep in mind your proportions so that you don’t appear larger. Pair these with straight cut or skinny jeans or pants. It’s all about creating a balanced look. This is perfect for during your pregnancy and after.

During these 9 months when your body is changing month by month a safe investment which you don’t have to worry about the fit, are shoes, jewelry, and handbags. Bold accessories and statement pieces can elevate any outfit. You will look chic and pulled together taking the focus away from the outfit that you are wearing.

Maternity lingerie
Supportive undergarments are extremely important during any trimester. Especially as your bust size increases. If you are planning on nursing opt for bras where cups can be unfastened at the straps.

Another local designer whose designs I absolutely love is Mel Brookes. Her curve friendly brand is perfect for just after baby and beyond.

My advice to all the beautiful expecting moms…. don’t change your personal style, just adapt it to flatter and complement your new shape.
The key is to invest in pieces you can wear again after your pregnancy.
Comfortable maternity lingerie makes all the difference.
